The first two students to achieve the new Guernsey Certificate in International Insurance Management have received their qualifications.
Nicola Shakerley, who works at Willis Tower Watson Guernsey, and Rutendo Rumano, who passed with a distinction grade and works at Artex Guernsey, were presented with their certificates at an event to celebrate the Guernsey International Insurance Association’s 40th anniversary.
The qualification, which takes six months to complete, is newly certified and has been developed by Sagacious Group, an alumni of experienced insurance professionals, in conjunction with the Guernsey International Insurance Association and the GTA University Centre.
It aims to give candidates actionable, practical knowledge of all facets of the Guernsey insurance international industry, from governing laws, governance and basic principles to the specifics of captive insurance and index linked securities.
“The GIIA course material was comprehensive, covering all areas relevant to international insurance and providing an in-depth insight into Guernsey insurance,” said Rutendo.
“I would definitely recommend the course to anyone who wishes to pursue a career in insurance in Guernsey and those who are currently in the industry for their continuous professional development.”
GIIA Chair Adele Gale, who presented Nicola and Rutendo with their certificates, said: “Providing relevant and quality training opportunities to our members has become a key focus for GIIA in the last five years, starting with the creation of the Insurance Development Forum, and now the re-write of the late John Parkinson’s textbook as well as the creation of the certificate and diploma.
“This course provides a very relevant qualification to those working in the Guernsey industry as well as those further afield who have an interest in Guernsey captives. A sustainable industry, which embraces succession planning, is key to supporting our clients for the decades to come and GIIA plays a crucial role in providing a platform for our members to collaborate, share knowledge and innovate.
“Congratulations to Nicky and Rutendo on passing the certificate, a wonderful achievement.”
Julia Graham, Chief Executive of the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers in Industry and Commerce (Airmic), said: "On behalf of Airmic I was delighted to support the 40th Anniversary of GIIA. Many Airmic members have captives domiciled in Guernsey, which is hardly surprising given the financial reputation of the island, its acknowledged skills pool, and proximity to the London Market.
“With trust built up over many years – it is an obvious go-to domicile. Airmic is pleased to support the GIIA International Insurance Course, the quality of which reflects the reputation of the Island and have offered to host several opportunities for students to take the associated examination in London."
Nick Wild, Honorary Secretary of the Sagacious Group, added: “It is very pleasing that the hard work of so many volunteers to create this course has been rewarded with all candidates passing at the first exam sitting and one with Distinction.”
